Electrician in Syracuse, Indiana

Half the houses on Wawasee started out as somewhere to spend July.

Now people live in them all year, with central air, a hot tub, a car charging in the garage and a kitchen that draws more than the whole cottage used to. The wiring is usually the last thing to catch up.

McClone Electric is a second-generation business and has worked this county since 1981.

When the service was sized for a cottage

The panel tells you quickly. Fuses, or a small panel with nothing left in it, or a service that did fine in 1970 and now carries four times what it was meant to.

What usually pushes it over:

  • Central air added to a place that never had it
  • A hot tub, which is its own circuit and its own disconnect
  • An EV charger in the garage
  • A kitchen remodel — induction, double oven, microwave, dishwasher
  • A well pump and a lift on the same service as everything else

We will say what your service can carry, and if it can take the hot tub or the charger as it is, you will hear that from us too.

Remodels and additions

Kitchens, baths, additions, finished basements, three-season rooms that became four-season rooms.

On a cottage service a remodel is a panel question before it is a lighting one, so we start with the panel, which sets the price of everything after it. Recessed lighting, under-cabinet, ceiling fans, outdoor and dock-side lighting. See residential.

Getting power down to the water

A Wawasee lot can be a long way from the house to the shore, and that distance is the whole problem.

The wire gets sized for the run, not for the load alone, or you end up with a lift that hums and a light that browns out every time the pump kicks on. It goes in conduit, underground, with a disconnect where you can get at it and GFCI protection at the water.

Standby power

If the power goes out for two days in February and nobody is at the house, the question is what is running when you are not there.

We can put in a standby generator on propane, natural gas or diesel, depending on the house and what is already on site, with an automatic transfer switch so it switches over without anyone there to do it. See generator installation.

Businesses in Syracuse

Offices, restaurants, retail, churches, rentals and light commercial. LED retrofits as well, and we will help get the utility rebate paperwork together, though the filing is yours to send. Nights and weekends when the place cannot be shut down during business hours.

When it cannot wait

Storm damage, power out, breakers tripping. Call whether you are at the house or away from it. Someone will pick up, as they have since 1981. Emergency electrician.

Questions people ask

Is my cottage’s service too small for a hot tub or a charger?
Look at the panel. If there is no room left in it, or you keep resetting the same breaker, call us before the hot tub or the charger arrives.
Can you do the work while we are not there?
Yes, arranged ahead of time.
Is a small job worth a call?
Yes. Nothing is too big or too small.
